Bill Meltzer: Flyers Sign Högberg to ELC

Can someone explain how it's a 2-year ELC as opposed to a "standard" 3-year ELC?

Signing age is determined on September 15 of the beginning of the contract. Hogberg will be 22 as of Sept 4 this year, a few days before Sept. 15. Because he will be 22 OR 23 years old on signing age of his ELC he is eligible for a standard 2 year ELC.

18-21 - 3 years
22-23 - 2 years
24 - 1 year
any signing age after 24 is unlimited to the max of all other Standard player contracts. ie 8 years.

Are the commentators for the games going to be physically at the games, or reporting from they're own location, Not sure in this day and age it matters but just curious as to if that has been brought up in the new tentative proposals.

Bill, I listened to your prospects pod cast the other day. Nice listen by the way. You were mentioning the Flyers’ talent in the collegiate level and focused on Brink and York understandably. Thought you might bring up the improving Noah Cates. He has been climbing my rankings of the prospects over the last couple season. I get Brink and York have some high ceilings but Cates is pretty close to Pro ready in my books. Any thoughts on him?

This was good to hear regarding Wyatt Kalynuk.

"I think when they drafted him, they recognized out of the gate that this guy could be a big part of their organization moving forward. Cates will likely turn pro next year. The Flyers are quite high on him.

I’m assuming we’ll resign Hägg and Myers on D. Braun could be where we get a slot.

On offense there’s Pitlick, Grant, NAK, and I think Thompson. Any more? I think at least 2 of them come back, if not 3.

Oh, and sadly considering Lindblom is a LTIR, how does that effect things?

Hell, Patrick for that matter. What do we do with him? Would he take a 1/~$1m deal? What would you offer? I think there are a few fans around here that just cut him loose. I think there’s too much potential for that, and a safe roll of the dice would be a better solution.

I thought Matt Read signed a 3 year ELC as a 24/25 year old. Was that just a coincidence that they chose 3 years?

At this point, tender both of them their qualifying offers for next year and evaluate next offseason.

Thanks Bill. Cates just looks like a good bottom six guy to me. I know bottom six guys are easier to find but good ones are still important to have in the system.

Not with the playoffs maybe possibly around the corner hahaha

Seems like a Raffl type; pretty simple game, has pro level skating and hands, good on the defensive side.

Not saying he and Raffl will perform the same, just that their styles and likely roles (bottom 6 winger) seem similar.

One more for Kalynuk. Tight with going to 50 if they sign Wyatt Kalynuk. He is a decent prospect to keep if they can sign him. If they sign him they are done until after the season on moves.

Yeah, you need to sign him on a small bridge plan on the cheap. He will have to take it and then prove that he can play to get a bigger deal. No way the Flyers want to cut him loose just yet. Too much potential. That kid can play. Man would he make a high end #3C and later develop into a high end #2C

They are not going to let that just walk without a fight. They will be betting on his recovery.

Not necessarily. They could always make a trade if need be (i.e. Chris Stewart and a 5th for a 6th). Hell, they COULD trade anyone right now, even Coots or Giroux. The TDL is all about playoff eligibility.
